The course emphasises the traditional skills and techniques of hand binding and helps you develop a deeper insight into this rewarding craft, whose origins go back over 2, years. Cutting tools, presses and other binding equipment and materials are all available for what is one of very few residential bookbinding courses offered in the UK. Leather Binding: Terminology and Techniques growing over time into the expression of the craft of bookbinding we are familiar with today. but leather can also be left flexible, covering the front, back, and spine of the book. When extended over the fore edge to protect the textblock, it forms what’s called a yapp style binding.

Workshops at Green’s Books are in small groups and give step-by-step tuition in various bookbinding and conservation techniques. Unless otherwise stated workshops are held at the studio near Malvern, and run from am to pm. Tea/coffee, handouts and materials are included in the fee unless otherwise specified. Book binding is the result of binding and sewing several quires or gatherings in order to form a volume. It was the last operation the codex underwent, with which it was already complete. The function of bookbinding is not only keeping all gatherings bound together and in the correct order, but also to protect them, and it could confer.

  Designed as a practical course for beginners and hobbyists and also as a reference for more advanced students, this book covers all the basic techniques of cloth and leather binding, including tools, materials and the workshop. The most common bindings are covered, such as single section, case, flat-back and Buckram library-style/5. Students studying on our courses can develop skills in traditional bookbinding, gold tooling, paper marbling, historic and experimental book structures and contemporary fine binding. Students interested in book arts can explore both classic and innovative techniques and structures to produce unique books .
