This guide book was written as a short and simple explanation of how to understand, interpret and process data from marine magnetometers. The aim of the guide is to show how to take a set of information recorded from a marine magnetometer survey, to explain what it means and to enable you to produce some useful results. Ever since the development of the first magnetometer back in , it has gone through many changes. It is an instrument with a sensor that measures magnetic flux density (B) in Tesla or As/m 2. Magnetometers refer to sensors used for sensing magnetic fields or to systems which measure magnetic field using one or more sensors.

For example, combination compasses and magnetometers are used on satellites and aboard airplanes that map the local structure of the Earth's magnetic field. Navies use compasses and magnetometers to detect submarines under water. Surveyors can use these magnetometers to locate boundary stakes buried in the ground or hidden by vegetation. Selection.   The digital compass of each device were compared against two "real" compasses (a simple under-$ compass and a professional navigator's compass). Calibration was performed as needed or as requested by the device. The phone was aligned with the compass needles, and the variation in the heading (which should be or 0) is noted.

Multi-sensor imaging systems using the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and digital magnetic compass (DMC) for geo-referencing have an important role and wide application in long-range surveillance systems. To achieve the required system heading accuracy, the specific magnetic compass calibration and compensation procedures, which highly depend on the application conditions, should Author: Branko Livada, Saša Vujić, Dragan Radić, Tomislav Unkašević, Zoran Banjac. A compass sense is enough for an animal to figure out latitude, based on changes in the inclination of magnetic field lines (flat at the equator, plunging into the earth at the poles).

Wikipedia Citation. The magnetic compass. The principle of the present day magnetic compass is in no way different from that of the compass used by the ancients.

It consists of a magnetized needle, or array of needles, pivoted so that rotation is in a horizontal plane. The superiority of the present day compass results from a better knowledge of the laws of File Size: 1MB.

Flux-gate, Hall-effect, magnetoresistive, and magnet/rotating coded card designs, to name a few, have been deployed. The testing of these magnetic instruments is routinely done at NDBC's "compass-rose" test stand.
